Meet Harvie

My first spinning wheel. :)
 Some spinning

More spinning. I really like having a spinning wheel of my own. I can spin for 5 minutes or an hour if I want to. Next year I want to buy the bulky flyer so I can make larger N-Ply skeins.

It is that time of year...

This is what I spent most of Friday doing.

I was given 2 large boxes of cucumbers and decided to make pickles. The ones on the left are canned and the ones on the right are meant to be kept in the refrigerator.

Update

I've been knitting and crocheting on things for the Stash Dash. I finally finished the granny square blanket for the in-laws. I only made 16 blocks so the total yardage for the blanket is 3,090. I also finished redoing the button band on my mother's cardigan, which is another 1,400yds. With the smaller items that have already been finished my total yardage for the Stash Dash right now is 5,381. I want to try to finish a of my UFOs before the end of August. I feel a little edgy with so much on the needles. I have 4 pairs of socks(3 pairs have the 1st sock done), a shawl, a pair of mittens( that only need one thumb), a cardigan, and a sweater.

5K Stash Dash 2011

The The Knit Girllls are having a yarn stash down on Ravelry. It started May 28th and ends August 15th.The goal is to knit, crochet, weaving, and/spin a total of 5K (5,468 yards). Guidelines for the Stash Down can be found here.

I've already finished a few smaller projects and posted them. I decided to try to crochet a Granny square blanket to use up some of my Red Heart Super Saver yarn.
I've finished 8 squares. I'm planning on making 20 blocks. Each square is approximately 190 yds.
20sq. X 190yds = 3,800 yds. If I can manage to finish the blanket it will be one less Christmas gift to make. I'd like to make another one with smaller squares using plain colored yarn.

Maine Fiber Frolic

Thunder, Hail, and Rain...O, My!

Say what you will about Maine. Our long dark winters and freezing snow storms are legendary. As much as I sometime hate snow I'd rather live in Maine than anywhere else in the US.

Wednesday was not a good day for Maine. We have had a Tornado Warning, inch sized hail and severe thunder storms.

Life Goes On........

I have not had time to post anything in the last few weeks. Sometimes life seems to get in the way. I did manage to knit/crochet 26 dish clothes this month. I want to try and knit or crochet at least 75% of my cotton stash. I'd like to get it all to fit in one small plastic tote, right now it is taking up three. Hopefully by the end of next month most of my cotton will be FOs (Finished Objects). That is all for now. I will try to set aside some time this weekend to post a few pictures of what I am working on.

DIY

After storing most of my books in large plastic totes for more then a year I decided it was time for new bookcases. I have a bookcase already. It is a short bookcase with only three shelves which are too deep unless you like to have your books two rows deep, I do not. I like seeing all my books. So when I was at Walmart early this week I picked up a new bookcase. It is meant to be used as a Media Case for CD's and DVD's. The shelves aren't very deep and paperback books fit very nicely.

There are 105 books on this bookcase when full. I'm going to need at least one more for the rest of my paperbacks. This style won't really work for hardcover books so I'll have to keep looking for something for them.

The Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny hanging out at my house.

Adding to the Stash

I went shopping with the Husband today. While I ran into ACMoore he waited in the car, because I'm nice and don't make him come in with me. I was looking for 3mm and 4mm DPNs. They didn't have any. I did find some large balls of cotton yarn in the bagged Mill Ends.
My best guess is Lily Sugar'n Cream Cotton Ombre, about 760yds. Both balls were in one bag.

I'm not sure what these are. When I picked these up I thought there were 2 balls of yarn in each bag. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the bags and found one giant hank in each bag. I'm guessing there is about 1,500yds of this yarn. It is about the same weight as the Lily yarn.

Bad Cat

Why is it that cats always wait until you are in the middle of knitting a lace shawl to jump in your lap and want to be petted. This bad kitty also drools when she is happy. Cat drool and wool do not mix.

Springtime Spinning

I burrowed my aunt's spinning wheel last week so I could try to work through some of my fiber. I do have several spindles it takes a long time to spin using a spindle.  I'm saving up to buy my own spinning wheel. Sadly, it will be several more months before I can afford it.
Isn't it Lovely

"Domestic Wool Top" from Halcyon Yarn hand-dyed by me with food coloring.
 Half a single.
The first Navajo plied bobbin.
This is the first time I've ever Navajo plied. I found this video How to Navajo Ply Yarn on YouTube very helpful. After a few false starts I figured out how to do it. I love the way the yarn comes out when plied this way.

FO's of the Week

First- a little stuffed monster for a friend's toddler. I made up this pattern as I went along and didn't take any notes. I am planning to knit another one and post the pattern later on this year.
Second- a pair of winter socks for my husband. These are knit toe-up with an afterthought heel. Another pattern I made up as I went. These are also the first finished Christmas Gift for 2011.
Third- a Newborn Sweater for a friend's Baby Shower. I took the picture before I sewed on the button. The pattern can be found here: Paxton preemie and newborn jacket (This is a Ravelry Link)

Mother Nature's Sick Joke

I live in Maine. Yes, this means I am use to very long, very  cold, very snowy winters. But come the beginning of April I should be thinking about what seeds I need to start for the garden, not digging my way out of a freak snow storm. A snow storm that dumped 15 inches of heavy wet snow on us.

And when did this storm hit us, on April Fools Day. I just don't see the humor in it.
